| INTRODUCTION & HISTORY Liberia began in 1821 as a settlement for freed American slaves. For those who had been wrenched from their African homelands, Liberia offered a return to their roots. Sadly, those who chose to embark on this venture adopted the attitudes of their former oppressors. From their earliest settlements, the colonists formed a ruling elite exercising power over the indigenous people. A legacy of cruelty and inhumanity was established, and continues today. The current civil war began in 1989-90. The initial aggressors are now so splintered that everyone is at war with everyone else. Even world journalists have bailed out. Liberia now has more refugees than citizens. This insanity means that nobody governs, and few relations are maintained with the rest of the world. SPECIAL FACT In 1928 Liberian President Charles King was elected by a 600,000 vote majority, even though Liberia had only 15,000 registered voters at the time. |
